Data Scientist Witch, Post 1: Witchy Data Collection

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to just pop in with a quick post about collecting data for your Craft. This can help you keep track of things, and you can learn interesting things from it (what kind of crystal do you own the most of? what percentage of spirits that you have worked with are of some particular species? etc). Playing with data is fun! I hope to do more on what to do with this data in future posts (featuring some of my own data), but right now I am swamped with work for my online classes. The data collection is part of my (very long) to do list.

Some things you might want to consider collecting data on:

— collection of crystals (what types? are they pendents? tumbled? raw? single point, double point, etc? you can do as little or as much specificity as you like here!)

— any other collections (herbs, etc)

–spells (record things such as intent, type of spell (jar, satchel, etc), ingredients used, effectiveness, moon phase, anything else you think is important)

— spirits worked with (species type, job/career, almost any other type of information you’d like to collect)

I am hoping to take my readers through fairly simple things, like calculating averages, percentages, and plotting histograms with your data, probably in Excel since that is easily accessible. Don’t expect tutorials–I will more than likely be linking to outside sources for this! And if you’re not a mathy person, no worries–the computer should be able to do it all for you, if your data is properly formatted and your commands are correct!

I didn’t know where this post would end when I started writing it, but I suppose this is Data Scientist Witch, Post 1 of I-Don’t-Know-How-Many. I’ve gotten myself quite excited about all the directions this can go in, but unfortunately, my mundane has to come first. Class deadlines don’t move.

In conclusion: grab your crystals. Count them. Fill out your data table. Use it as and excuse to organize them as you go. Wait for Data Scientist Witch, Post 2!

I hope you’ll take this sciencey, witchy journey with me!
