Wintery Witchery Update #4: Conclusion

Hello everyone! Apologies for the unscheduled disappearance. I experienced some technical difficulties, by which I mean my laptop refused to boot up. While waiting to get a new laptop setup, I have been doing what I can in the Winter Witchery Challenge, which comes to a close today.

I’ve been doing various things to keep up with the challenge after my computer failed. I experimented with using art as a form of meditation (something I’d like to try again some day), worked with my familiar spirits, met some new ones, and attempted to get back to my routine where my spiritual life was incorporated into my mundane life. I suppose in many ways that’s what I wanted to achieve with this two month challenge. I didn’t quite get there, but I did do things I wouldn’t have done without the challenge, so I think it still counts as a win in my book. And I do feel I can get back to my routine. I just need a little more time and stability in life, which isn’t where things have been, but they’re getting there.

In the end, a large part of this was also about recognizing that sometimes, mundane life will take over. The spiritual things will fall away, but I can always pick them back up. That, I think, is my main lesson here. If you were following along in the challenge, I hope you learned something as well.

Winter Witchery: Update #3

Three weeks into December already! Where has the time gone?

This was a very low spoons week for me, which you’ll see reflected in this update. I hope everyone is taking at least a little inspiration from my Winter Witchery Challenge!

December 15th: Spirit sensing. I didn’t get much for sensing my spirits individually, but did notice their energies as a whole. I made the mistake of lying down while I tried to sense them, and drifted off to sleep.

December 16th: meditation. With almost no spoons, this was all I could manage. I had some success.

December 17th: meditation again. Much as the previous day.

December 18th: spirit sensing. This didn’t go very well because as in my last attempt, I fell asleep.

December 19th: shadow work. I didn’t journal today, but instead worked with one of my tarot decks that focuses mainly on my shadow work, getting both a general message and a more shadow work specific message.

December 20th: energy work. I did alright considering how long it’s been. I feel I am slowly making progress.

December 21st: Winter Solstice celebration! My celebrations are generally very low key. This year it was a mug of hot chocolate with extra whipped cream, and a snowflake drawing with some blue fineliner pens. It’s not much, but I feel it’s enough to recognize the day.

I’ll be back next week for another update! I hope you are also taking some time to get back to your magic.

Winter Witchery: Update #2

How…how is it already time for the second update for the Winter Witchery Challenge? Where did December go?

December 8th: Divination day. I finally had the energy and presence of mind to do some divination! I’ve been itching to finally use my Marigold Tarot, which I got back in April or so and have barely touched because…life. I did four cards for a mini interview spread, then got three more for later messages. It felt great to do divination again.

December 9th: Crystal Info. Today I didn’t have much info or motivation, so I carried on working on my document with crystal information. If nothing else, I’m learning some neat geology tidbits!

December 10th: Crystal info, much the same as yesterday. Interesting find of the day: citrine can rarely naturally combine with amethyst, creating a purple and orangey bicolor crystal called “ametrine”.

December 11th: Crystal Organization. I got a burst of energy, and sorted the majority of my crystals into plastic storage containers that I usually see advertized for holding hardware or suchlike. Each compartment contains a little label, so I know for sure what crystal I’m looking at.

December 12th: Tried to spend a few minutes meditating and sensing my spirits better. It really was just a few minutes, but baby steps, right? I’m getting back into this, after all, I shouldn’t expect this to be easy right away.

December 13th: I was in the mood for something artistic, so I ended up creating an art piece with my acrylic markers, with colors and subject matter (mountains) influenced by the preferences of one of my spirits. It’s not my favorite thing I’ve ever created, but it was nice to do some art and chat with a spirit.

December 14th: Another spirit sensing day. I was able to sense very little, as my mind was wandering, my usual meditation methods to calm down my brain failing me. But, I tried, and that should count for something.

I’ll be back next week for another update so you can follow along in my journey! I hope this inspires you to do something witchy as well!

Winter Witchery: Update #1

Hello everyone! Micah here with an update on my Winter Witchery Challenge. We’re a week into December, so here’s a quick summary of what I’ve done for each day so far:

December 1st: A brainstorming day for where I wanted to go from here. I asked myself 4 questions: what do I want to continue or resume in my Craft? What would I like to explore? What do I want to do more of? What do I want to do less of?

December 2nd: Today was a ‘research day’ where I explored one of the areas I identified yesterday, which is crystals. I happen to have a crystal shop within walking distance, so I took a stroll up and took one of the little cards with crystal correspondence on it for every. single. crystal. in the shop. It was quite a thick stack of paper by the end! I came home with a few crystals I picked out myself by intuition, and one more that one of my spirit companions led me to.

December 3rd: Today I spent time with my spirits, just being with them. I also started a document with the name, correspondences, and some geological info of crystals. I’m basing it off the little info cards I picked up yesterday. It isn’t all crystals, of course, but it’s a start. The geological info was to help keep me grounded in what I know and trust–I’m still a little dubious on crystals, but I do have an interest in them from a geological standpoint as well.

December 4th: I chatted with one of my spirits about crystals. This spirit happens to be rather knowledgeable about them (they’re the one that lead me to one on the second). We chatted mostly about the powers and limitations of crystals, what they can and can’t do, and also a little about how to use them. I always feel I don’t know what to do with them once I get them.

December 5th: Today was the resumption of a habit I tried to start a while back, “Shadow Sunday”, where I take some time each Sunday to do a little shadow work. This time I used a visualization, which you can find here.

December 6th: I spent a few minutes doing some energy work practice. It’s been ages, but this used to be a daily habit, and I want to return to that.

December 7th: Spirit time. I spent a few minutes meditating, trying to sense my spirit friends and identify who was where. It quickly turned into a cuddling session with me just trying to be still and sense them. It didn’t last long, as I’m not in the habit of sitting still, but perhaps in time I can do this for longer.

Well, that was a much, much longer update than I intended it to be! But I do want you to get a good idea of what the challenge is aimed at, and hopefully inspire you as well!

Are you participating in the Winter Witchery Challenge? How is it going for you? Are you enjoying it? Is it helping you get back into your Craft?

I’ll be back next week or so for another update!

Winter Witchery Challenge

Hello everyone!

I’ve gotten a bit away from my Craft due to mundane stuff and the madness of the last couple years. So I’m going to be devoting December to getting back to it. I think many of us are in the same boat, so I invite you to join me! I know December can be a busy month for many, so I’m hoping to continue this into January as well. I’ll be posting here hopefully every week or two for updates, so you can follow my journey– and maybe be inspired for your own!

I intend to start this challenge on December first with a brainstorming session: what do I want to resume doing? Is there anything I no longer wish to do in my Craft? What new things do I want to explore?

There are no specific prompts. Just try to do something witchy each day. It can be big or small. Researching an area of interest for your Craft counts!

I hope you’ll join me in this adventure!

Burn Away the Sadness Spell

This is a quick little spell for releasing sadness. Witchcraft is of course not a replacement for medical professionals of any sort. Seek help if you need it.

I dreamed up this spell in as I was trying to fall asleep one night. For this spell you will need:

  • an envelope
  • paper
  • something to write with
  • basic energy work skills
  • a match or lighter, and a safe space to have open flames (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Ground and center in whichever manner you prefer. You can shield as well if it feels appropriate to you.
  2. Take the paper and writing utensil. Write down all the things that are making you sad. All of them.
  3. Collect the sad energy from within yourself, in whatever way you prefer. Imbue the paper with the sad energy. Make it connected so that the energy merges with the paper.
  4. Place the paper in the envelope and seal the envelope.
  5. Burn the envelope. If you cannot burn things or do not wish to, rip it to shreds. Visualize all your sadness being burned/ripped up and destroyed along with it.
  6. Dispose of the ashes or paper pieces as you see fit (but keep the environment in mind!)
  7. Ground and center again.

And that’s it! You should be able to adapt this to other negative emotions, as well. Feel free to ask questions, or tell me how it goes if you try it!

Bead Dangle Spells

Happy New Year everyone! Here for a quick spell idea. This isn’t open to everyone as not everyone has these supplies lying around, but I think it is still worth sharing. For this kind of spell you will need some jewerly supplies:

  • Headpin
  • Beads of your choice
  • Round nose pliers
  • Wire cutters or strong scissors
  • Jumpring

You can pick beads based on the correspondences of its material or color, or anything else you see fit. You can do as many or as few as you like–I found 5 beads or so at about 6 mm was the maximum that fit on my headpins. Yours might be different.

The process is very easy. You can charge the spell either as you go, bead by bead, or at the end.

  1. Do your usual pre-spell routine, i.e. grounding and centering, cleansing your spell ingredients, whatever it is you do.
  2. String beads onto headpin (make sure the hole of your first bead is smaller than the end of the headpin so nothing falls off–add an extra small bead first if needed).
  3. Make sure to leave space on the headpin, around half an inch. If there is significantly more than this, snip it with the wire cutters or scissors.
  4. Using the round nose pliers, curl the extra wire around towards itself, until it forms a closed loop. If there is more wire, do this again until you have two closed loops on top of your beads (you probably won’t get more loops unless you left extra space on the headpin). Put the jumpring through this loop.
  5. Your bead dangle is done! Charge it now if you didn’t already. You can place it wherever you like now–turn it into a pendant, make two for earrings, attach it a jar spell with a ribbon or such tied around the jar, dangle it from a book using a paperclip…you get the idea.
  6. Whenever you feel the spell is completed and set in place, do any ritual you usually do upon ending a spell.

I hope that gave you inspiration! Have fun making your bead dangle spells.

Healing From an Astral Injury

Hello there witchy people! Today’s post is about healing from an astral injury.

You may think, “But I have a guardian spirit protecting me so I won’t be hurt!” or “All my wards are strong; I’m safe!” and I’m not here to tell you those things are untrue. I will say, however, that no guardian (or group of guardians) is infallible, and no wards (or system thereof) is impenetrable. A strong enough, persistent enough, clever enough entity could get through.

I’ve also noticed some people are attacked more than others. Some have something about themselves/their energy that makes them a target. Some spirits may even attack because of something that happened with one of your previous incarnations. And from what I can tell, some spirits just think it’s fun to hurt humans.

Regardless of other factors, let’s say an astral injury has occurred. How do you heal? What do you need to know?

Metaphysical Bedrest

The main thing is what I refer to as “metaphysical bedrest”. In other words, keep any witchy activities to an absolute minimum.  Preferably, don’t do them at all. This includes tarot, other forms of divination, spellwork, energy work, sigilcrafting, astral travel…you name it, it counts. All these things involve using or manipulating energy, either your own or something else’s. While injured, your energy body is fucked up. It needs rest.

You may do ‘small’ metaphysical things–ones that do not use much energy–as you are able (what is ‘small’ will vary from person to person). If it feels like too much, or you sense any kind of pain, stop. Yes, it is incredibly irritating to not be able to practice your Craft as you heal, but taking metaphysical bedrest will let you heal faster.

Your Astral Form Effects Your Physical Form

Your astral body and physical body, while not exactly the same thing, are also not entirely separate entities. If your astral arm is injured, for example, act as if your physical arm is injured. Put it on rest. Use it sparingly, if at all. This acts as the astral arm being on rest as well, and gives it time and ability to heal.

You Will Be Tired, and You Might Feel “Off”

Remember, you are injured, even if the injury isn’t physical or visible! You will be more fatigued and tire more easily. This will be more noticeable with more severe injuries. Take it easy, in every sense. That’s really all of this condensed into one sentence; take it easy, rest, and you will heal.

In addition to being fatigued, you may also feel physically unwell. This could be a physical, chronic illness flaring up, or just feeling “off” and unwell in nonspecific ways. This should pass as you heal. Treat yourself as best you can. Painkillers should still work for physical pain, regardless of its origin.

Needing Help is Okay

If you need help with healing, that’s okay. You may have a trusted spirit friend who can help you heal, or even another witch who can heal. Just make sure you trust them and understand the risks involved. Just because someone is a healer, does not mean everything will go according to plan. And if your healer friend has advice on how to get better, I recommend you heed their words!

Astral Forms Regenerate (and Their Death Isn’t Yours)

This one is…weird. But the thing is, things that would kill humans if they happened to our physical bodies don’t kill us if they happen to a human’s astral form. Astral forms, even severely damaged or killed, eventually regenerate. The above recommendations will help them heal faster, however.

In this section I address some potential questions.

What if I need to maintain wards and cannot go on metaphysical bedrest?

This is a harder one because no, doing magic isn’t going to help you rest and heal but yes, protection and warding is important. What you do here, I think, is really up to you. If you have any trusted spirit friends, I’d ask them to help you maintain your wards until you are able to do so yourself. If not…well, if you feel it is needed to maintain your wards, then you can do so. You will still heal, but slower.

I think the best way out of this is to prevent this circumstance. This could include spirits who act as your guardians and maintain wards for you at all times, or ones who have agreed to do so if you are injured. You could also create a servitor to do this, or tie in whatever wards you create to an energy source–the sun, a crystal, etc (remember that over time, wards will degrade, like the walls of an unmaintained building–they need something to keep them maintained and strong).

Does it matter if my astral injury occurs in the astral or in the physical?

Not really. In the astral, you will of course go back into your physical body at the end of your trip, and recovery is much the same.

Will I feel pain?

Maybe. I think this depends on the person, and how in tune they are with their astral form. I often do not feel pain like I would physical pain, but react as if the same injury had occurred to my physical body.

How do I know when I am totally healed?

Signs of full recovery include being able to tolerate all the metaphysical tasks you previously could, feeling more energetic, and generally feeling “yourself” again. You may have good days where your feel okay before you are fully healed–listen to anything indicating you aren’t healed yet (such as getting more tired than expected, tiring sooner, or feeling pain in your astral form, etc). How long full recovery takes depends both on the person and the injury, but minor injuries usually take a few days, around a week for moderate, and two weeks for severe injuries. But like I said, there are a lot of variables in that!

I hope this is helpful information! Send me any question you have on this topic and I will do my best to answer.

Stay witchy and be safe!

Finding a Path

Many witchcraft posts tell you about various types of witches and ask about your path. Are you a sea witch? A hedge witch? Kitchen witch? Or perhaps posts ask what you do for your craft. Do you make sigils? Spells? Use herbs? Crystals? Work with spirits? Divination? And so on. So today I wanted to say a few things about finding your path.

Your path may not be clear.

This is okay. Not everything is going to be obvious, especially in the witchy world. That is valid. There’s nothing wrong if your path doesn’t immediately make itself clear.

You can have more than one path.

Want to be a kitchen witch but also a sea witch? That’s fine. Do it. Your path can be multiple paths. Do you want to focus on sigils but also spells? Go for it!

You do not have to do all the things.

If you don’t feel called towards something, you don’t have to do it. If you’re not drawn to water, you don’t have to be any sort of water or sea witch. If you don’t like the idea of working with spirits, it is not a requirement. Nothing is a requirement, really; so long as you do some form of witchcraft, you are a witch!

Your path can change.

If you start off interested in some things but later lose interest in those things, or add other interests on top of that, this too is valid.

Witchcraft is your own thing. Do what you want. Follow your path. Do your research into each area that calls to you. Follow whatever path you think might be yours. It may not be apparent. It may not come to you immediately. It can take time to find your path and there is nothing wrong with that!

Witchcraft, Spirit Work, and Finding Your Reality

If you’ve been doing anything with witchcraft for even a short time, you have probably seen some conflicting information. This can especially happen with spirit work, in my experience. What is the truth? What is real? What should you believe? Here are some pointers to help you find your path!

UPG and personal experience

UPG stands for unverified personal gnosis. Essentially, this is something you have found to be true, but has not been confirmed by outsiders. It is well grounded in your personal experience. This is something to go by, but make sure you practice good discernment! The mind is a complicated thing and is capable of tricking you. That’s why discernment is so important.

Discernment

Discernment is hugely important in witchcraft, especially in spirit work. It is not a one and done deal. I am frequently asking myself if I heard a spirit properly, if I am sensing what I think I sense. It takes a lot of confidence and trust in your intuition! Discernment leads me to the truth.

I also know my mind is only capable of so much; if something happens that even my overactive imagination could not have come up with, then it must be the truth.

Dogma: what you’ve heard vs. what you learn

You may hear something from another practitioner, only to discover something that conflicts it. You may, for example, read that all demons are evil, and then stumble across a very nice demon (I am lucky enough to know more than one nice demon!). Not everyone knows all. While that other practitioner is misinformed about demons, you have now learned otherwise. These lessons are important. When learning from others, keep an open mind and remember that dogma is not going to be your friend in all cases. I do not advise taking everything you read as truth at face value. Your own personal experience, in my opinion, is much more valuable than what others say. That being said, doing your own research and asking others questions is still helpful and important! They can help verify your experience or open you up to a new way of thinking or new information.

Different =/= bad =/= wrong

Just because someone has a different experience or belief than you, it does not mean that that person is bad or wrong. We all have different lives and each of us live differently. Our UPG is not the same. Respectful disagreement is possible, even in occult topics. When you come across someone who is ‘wrong’ based on what you know, please consider before saying something. It may well be upsetting to them, and there is a place for discussion, but not bitter arguments.
